The Poseidon Adventure

Today I took a trip out side of Athens to see Poseidon's temple on Cape Sounion. The view was a little windy but it was a nice trip down the southern coast of Greece.

who knew?

did you know that the pap smear was named after the greek, George Papanicolaou in 1943? Also Nike owes it's name to Godess of Victory Nike? Depending upon the time of various myths, she was described as the daughter of Pallas (Titan) and Sticks (Water), and the sister of Cratos (Strength), Bia (Force), and of Zelus (Rivalry). Nike and her siblings were close companions of Zeus the dominant deity of the Greek pantheon.

Opa!

A few pictures from today's adventure through Athens. the weather was raining on and off through out the day so i didn't get to look around as much as I wanted :( Tomorrow we are heading down the coast see Poseidon's Temple.

Good Vibrations

Who knew that Mark Wahlberg worked for the government? one of the guys here is a dead ringer for for the actor. I guess he gets mistaken all the time for him and once got tossed out of a club for causing such a disturbance since people thought it was marky mark. On a real celebrity siting news the president of Slovakia is staying at our hotel. A few of us went to the pool last night. maybe we can find him and ask him to join us for some more fun in the water tonight?

TGI Friday's

you would think that being in bogota i would be exploring the great food they have down here but you would be wrong. It wasn't actually my first choice for lunch yesterday but we had a large group and the other restaurant had a huge wait to get in so we ended up at Friday's. what i found funny there was instead of wearing a lot of wacky pins all over their shirts they were wearing random hats. this one guy had had some weird spiky hat with what looked like a shrew head on the front. I really wanted to ask him what it was. now even in the states they don't wear the pins any more since the movie Office Space came out and mocked them with flair. Maybe they just didn't get the memo down here that the wacky, crazy pins/hat thing was out?

TMI

I just saw for the second time this commercial for tampons that was entirely too much information. The whole ad was shot from the vagina's point of view through out the day. yeah, too much information.

Extreme Sports

Europe seriously needs to get some new sports. The ESPN equivalent here has been running the exciting sports of Darts and pool....yeah. It not so much that they have them on tv it's how psychotic the people. For example you would have thought the the guys playing darts were wrestlers the way they were playing things up. This one guy has a stage name, cape and everything when he came walking out of a cloud of smoke. Then during the game they would pause and do these dramatic profiles of the dart players. They would have the wife sitting in the forefront with the husband in the back. he of course is lit up while the rest of the shot is dark. The wife also talks about all the hard training and sacrifices they've had to make. Yeah, it must have been hard going down to the local pub, having a couple of drinks and tossing a couple of darts at the board.

Triple threat

If it isn't bad enough that I have to watch for cars on the streets here you add in some trams and bikes and you have a triple threat on the road. The cars are actual the least of my problems here as most people don't have them. The bikes are the vicious ones around here....everyone has one and I mean everyone. I guess it's good for exercise and all but they're all over the place and they sneak up on you. In a fairly close second would be the trams. There's nothing separating them on the roads so it would be pretty easy to get run down if you're not watch. Making all of this worse is it's hard to tell where the sidewalk/bike path/tram way/roads begins and ends. It all just bleeds into each other. Definitely can't be going to those other coffee shops if you want to stay alive on the roads around here.

good vs evil

I've learned a few things since being in Amsterdam. One of them being not all coffee shops are good. I found for the most part those spelled the American way are the bad "coffee shops" while the ones spelled Koffie are the good ones. Course there are always excepts as shown below so always be careful when looking for a real coffee shop.

Good coffee shop.....
